Crabtree & Evelyn - Tarocco Orange

Around 10 times a day, I moisturise my hands, they tend to get really dry and I'm always conscious what they look like, as they're what tend to show the first signs of ageing.  So I'm always on the look out for a good moisturiser.

Back a couple of months ago I went to an event where Crabtree & Evelyn were doing demonstrations, and I had a go of one of their hand scrubs (Pomegranate) and I'm not kidding, my hands felt the softest they've ever felt, thanks to the hand scrub - not something I'd ever considered, or even knew existed.

Tarocco Orange, Eucalyptus & Sage Little Luxuries giftset £10.00*

They say "Infused with shea butter, macadamia nut oil, and extracts of Tarocco orange, bitter orange, eucalyptus and sage, this intensive cream nourishes skin so it's noticeably smoother after each luxurious use.
Award-winning formula with a blend of shea butter, macadamia nut oil and ceramides
Antioxidant-rich Tarocco Orange extract conditions the skin
Hands are noticeably softer with each use.

Fragrance: A clean, invigorating and energising citrus scent with an uplifting blend of orange, bergamot, and neroli."

My Thoughts

I really like the presentation of this set, I'm a big fan of orange (scent and colour) and love the pretty bow on the top.  For your £10 you get three products, a hand cream, a shower gel and a body lotion.  They're not 'full size' however, they're perfect travel size shower gel and body lotion - as for the hand cream I kept mine in my drawer at work (until I used it all up).

My favourite of the three products has to be the hand cream - it's what I went back to the most, like several times a day, enough that I used it up in less than a month.  The other products are lovely too, I'm just more into some of my other products at the moment.

The scent is really pretty, it's like a spiced/herbed orange perfect for a morning shower - this would make a great scent in a shampoo.

All three products performed well, none stood out with any big negatives, but they didn't give me the OMG I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT either - whereas the Pomegranate hand scrub and moisturiser did (I'll be buying this when I'm off my spending ban).  One thing to note, their lip balms smell absolutely amazing (I was having a sniff of them in the shop) - these are on my wish list too :)

Where you can buy them: Crabtree & Evelyn shops, and in their online store
Cost: £10 for this gift set
Would I replace? Yes, but I'd opt for the Pomegranate one as that's more my sort of scent (sweet)

What's your favourite Crabtree & Evelyn product?

Pink Bdellium Foundation brushes

You may recall my raving about the green Bdellium tools I reviewed some time ago, well, I've been a lucky Pixi3 and have received another two to review *giddy excited pixi3 dance* and what's more, they're pink!

The normal* £10.50 and small* £8.95 foundation brushes can be found on Beauty Chamber

They say "Each Bdellium brush is created using a balance of natural and/or synthetic hair to achieve the perfect amount of form and stiffness compatible with the function each brush is designed for.  The Green, Yellow & Pink Bambu Series and the Yellow Bambu brush sets, feature eco friendly makeup brushes with all sustainable bamboo handles and all vegan soft synthetic bristles and an anodized aluminium ferrule."

My Thoughts

There's a few things I look for in makeup brushes.  First off, they need to be synthetic hair as I'm not interested in anything using animal hair.  They need to be soft, especially a foundation brush, otherwise you'll get streaking.  And where possible, I like them to be ethical (I shall explain!).

One of the things I love about the Bdellium tools bambu series is that they're made from the worlds' most sustainable wood, Bamboo.  These brushes are cruelty free (yay!) and suitable for vegans, and lets face it, pretty!

I've been using these for a couple of weeks now, with varying degrees of built up foundation on them (I tend to clean them once a week - which is fine when you're not using Double Wear!).  I have a few foundation brushes which I've liked and disliked in the past (the Superdrug one is probably my least favourite, lots of streaking!), so I have a fairly good point of reference for these.  And I have to say, they're pretty amazing.  I've had either no, or next to no streaking, which is usually when I've been over zealous with my application.  They hold the product well and don't absorb it all up so there's very little wastage, and they're super soft on the skin - this is one of my favourite things about the Bdellium brushes, they're all so soft (and pretty!).

They're easy to clean and I've had no fall out from the bristles at all - its worth noting, with the green ones I reviewed previously, I've had no fall out whatsoever with those either.

I'm really struggling to find flaws with this brand, everything I've tried from them has been brilliant, surely they must have some dud products tucked away, they can't be perfect surely?

Where you can find them: Beauty Chamber
Cost: Most brushes are under £10 each, with these the normal one was £10.50 and the small one was £8.95
Would I buy more?  Definitely - spending ban be over!

Tropic | Body Love Butter Cream

Body butter is something that can either be perfect and exactly what you expect it to be, a lovely buttery melty lotion that makes your skin lovely and soft, and smelling great, or it can be a complete and utter disappointment - a rubbery texture that's a lot of effort to blend into the skin.

Over the past I've tested a lot of body butters, and have a pile of 'Yay I love it!' and a pile of 'Never to be used again', the question is, which pile did this one fall into?

Body Love butter cream* - 100ml £15 and can be bought on their online store

They say "A naturally nourishing Buttercream enriched with...

* Silky Jojoba & Macadamia oils to smooth & soften
* Rich Cocoa & Shea Butters to intensively hydrate
* Skin loving Vitamin E to rejuvenate & protect
* Active Sea Kelp extracts to firm & improve skin elasticity

Infused with notes of Lemon Myrtle & Orange Blossom essential oils for an uplifting, bright & seductive scent.  Ideal for use anywhere on the body and the perfect antidote to dry hands or feet."

My Thoughts

There are two key things I look for in a good body butter, firstly it needs to do what it says and feel like a butter, I expect it to melt as I blend it into my skin and have a butter-like consistency.  Secondly, I expect it to smell amazing and leave my skin smelling great all day.

This my friends, did both.

Let me describe the scent for you - the main scent is Lemons, then you'll smell the macadamia with the shea butter to make a really beautiful and fresh scent.  So many body butters are sickly sweet smelling to the extent that you wouldn't want to smell of it all day, but this is a lovely balance of citrus and shea butter, and not overpowering.

As for how it makes my skin feel, really lovely.  As you blend it in you feel the buttery texture melt and almost go slightly oily, which is immediately absorbed into your skin, leaving you with lovely soft skin.

I do have one hangup with this though, and it's the price/size balance - if this was £15 for 200ml I could live with that quite happily, but £15 for 100ml seems a bit steep to me.  As much as I loved it and have thoroughly enjoyed smelling of sweet lemons, the price tag does put me off a bit.  There is a silver lining though, it's only £5 more for the 200ml, making the 200ml much more appealing and much better value for money.  I will say this as well, it does feel very luxurious and would definitely earn itself a place amongst other high end skincare brands.

Where you can find it:  On their website, you can also find them on facebook and twitter
Cost: £15 for 100ml (or £20 for 200ml)
Would I replace? Yes, but not the 100ml, I'd go for the 200ml for £5 extra.

Feature: How to achieve smoky eyes

There’s no denying that a sultry, smoky eye looks hot. Best done in the evening, the smoky eye can dress up an outfit and add a dramatic take on otherwise simple looks. The question is: how do you achieve this look without looking like you have done ten rounds in the ring with Mike Tyson?

Start by prepping the skin with a primer and then apply your foundation as you would for the daytime.
Next, use an illuminating pen such as Touch Éclat well below the eyes around the sockets. Make up guru, Charlotte Tilbury, advises that many people make the mistake of taking this too close to the eyes, which makes them look tired. You can also use the illuminating pen to highlight the top of the cheekbones and down the bridge of the nose.

Before you add colour to the eyelid dust translucent powder under the eye with a big powder brush to
catch any falling shadow. Using a black or grey pencil liner, trace your top lash line from the inner corner to the outer. Then, use the same pencil to dot between your lower lashes. Using a cotton swab or an eyeliner brush smudge both lash lines.

Dust a light neutral shade of eye shadow across your brow bone below the eyebrow.
Sweep powder shadow, brown or grey, over your lid and into your crease, blending the colour up and
outward. After doing the initial blending, dip your eye shadow brush in a drop of water and using a more shimmery eye shadow, apply a little to the middle of the lid blending carefully. This will prevent colour from fading and give your lids a lovely shimmer.

Use an eyelash curler at the base of the eyelashes and then finish off with two coats of black mascara. A
lovely extra is to add a few individual eyelashes to the top lash line in the outer corner of the eye.
Always be wary of the makeup artist’s golden rule: only accentuate one area of the face. If you are doing a smokey eye it looks much better to keep the lips close to nude and the cheeks a neutral shade.

I’m a big fan of trying new products so I’m always posting lots of reviews of make-up, skincare and hair care. Although I don’t exclusively write about them, I do love natural products and really enjoy trying out new brands. As a student, with the matching budget, I appreciate a good bargain and I tend to post regularly on good deals that I come across so if you’re a bargain hunter like me those posts are always worth a look. Above all though One Little Vice is somewhere where your voice is always welcome! I started my blog as a way to communicate with fellow beauty lovers so I always really appreciate comments and love having people contact me on twitter, especially if it's to talk about beauty products! So if you do check my blog out and want to get in touch you're more than welcome!

Week 12 update - 100 day spending challenge

Hi guys!  So... I'm gonna say it, just over 2 weeks to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Can you believe it?  I never thought I'd get this far, let alone succeed!  But, I don't want to speak too soon, there's still a couple of weeks left, and I'm determined not to cheat, I can't come this far and cheat now, not gonna happen!

So, how's this week been - if I said anything other than manic, I'd be lying.  It's been a crazy and tiring week, but in a good way.

Last Tuesday I got to play being a Makeup Artist for the day (see yesterday's post for that!), and then on Wednesday we went out for dinner after work (Wagamamas (I had Tofu Ramen)) and then on to the cinema to see Maniac with our friends.  Let me just say this, don't go and see Maniac.  Such a bad film, gory for the sake of being gory, massive plot holes and things that happen that are unnecessary and just don't make sense.  Right, glad that's out of the way!

So it's been a good week, I spent the weekend cleaning out my bedroom, it's still not finished but it's way tidier than it was.  It's a 4 day week this week as we have a 4 day weekend thanks to Easter (Thanks Jesus!), and I have two awesome things to look forward to this week.  Wednesday the hubby and I are going to a blogger event at Red Hot Buffet to sit at the Chef's table for a 7 course taster menu - HELLO!  Then on the Thursday, the PR agency for our big shopping centre (St Davids 2), are having Ladies night - which is open to everyone, there'll be walking fashion shows, free makeovers and all sorts of great things, so really looking forward to that too.
As for temptations, I've been so busy I haven't really had time to think - there's only been one thing on my radar this week and that's the nubar passion fruit cuticle oil.  Now that I've 'ripped' my acrylics off, my nails are in need of some TLC, so this is a definite purchase for me once I'm off my ban :)

How's your week been?

The day I became a...

... makeup artist.

Yep, you read that right!  A week ago I got to spend a fantastic evening being super creative being an MUA on a photo shoot.

The photographer and his wife make up Cross-Jones photography (located here in Cardiff).  They wanted to do a shoot inspired by the recent series of Americas Next top Model where the models had pigment all over their face.  The difference was, instead of using the peachy-red that was originally used on Alison, they wanted blue.

The model was Laura from What Laura Did (a local South Wales beauty and lifestyle blogger).  So, we rocked up at Laura's house, the Cross-Jones team set up their studio in Laura's spare room and I got to work on Laura!

I won't bore you with too many details of what I used, but it was basically a combination of 3 different blue eyeshadows as well as a silver one. Eyes started off very light with just mascara, and as the shoot progressed we added lots more eye shadow to the face, and darkened the eyes with black kohl liner, added a bit of gloss to the lips for the blue pigment to stick to too :)

I had a fantastic time, I loved every second of it, so thanks to Laura for being a great model, and thanks to Chantelle and Jonathan for being great photographers and inviting me to take part.

I hope you enjoy these photo's and be gentle, it was my first time being an MUA (not my first time doing makeup on others, but first time for a photographer)

MAC 90 min Makeup Lesson

So, a couple of weeks ago, I had a cheeky little treat, for Valentines my hubby bought me a MAC makeup lesson, so I booked in to go one day after work.  With the makeup lessons, they do the makeup on half your face and you do the other half under their guidance, thus teaching you (hopefully) new skills.

The lovely and amazing Joanne (the shop manager) was the lovely lady doing my makeup, demonstrating the products and giving me the lesson.  I have to say, the MAC freestanding door is worlds apart from the MAC in Debenhams when it comes to customer service - it was refreshing not to be ignored when I went to the freestanding store, for that, thanks Joanne (and the rest of the girls there) :)

Now, I've been a bit of a bad blogger in that I can't necessarily remember everything she used on me that day, so I'll be referring to the face chart to fill the gaps!

After priming (Prep & prime skin) and moisturising (Studio moisture fix & oil control lotion) we used the Face & Body foundation in N2, Joanne showed me how it 'cracks' when you warm it up.  If you haven't experienced this, put a tiny bit on the back of your hand, and rub your finger over it in small circular motions, keep going, keep going then you feel it suddenly get really thick and change consistency, well, now you have a concealer too!  Amazing!

Then we concealed up my blotchy skin with Pro Longwear in NW20 which worked great!

On to the brows we used Lingering and highlighted with Brule.  On the eyes we primed with Vintage Selection paint pot (beautiful!), Silver Birch, Texture & Folie.  For eyeliner we used Stubborn brown eyeliner (love that name!) which is a waterproof kohl liner (in the 5 hours it was on, it didn't transfer to my eyelid either, which ALWAYS happens!).

On the cheeks, we used an MSF in light (well, for all over the face!), the blusher we used was 'Rosy Out look' which is stunning and on my wish list now, and Lightscapade to highlight.

Finally the lips - we used the lip liner Subculture which is a lovely nude colour with a pink tint to it (if my memory serves me correctly!) and we used the gloss 'Dynasty at Dusk' love that name too!

Forgive me if I've got some of these names wrong, and the not great picture, but it was night time :)  I really love how Joanne did my makeup, different from how I would have done it, focussing on bring the crease colour upwards as opposed to out (which is how I usually do it) and not adding liner to my water liner (which I always do).  She also didn't use liquid liner and in brown not black - it was really refreshing to do something different, and she did it so well, I thought my makeup looked really feminine which was lovely.  Next time I have an event coming up (after my spending ban is over of course), I think I'll book in to have her do my makeup again.  Thanks again lovelies!

March Birchbox

I think it's fair to say, I'm a fan of Birchbox.  I was so incredibly excited when I heard they were launching over here and I'll be honest, I haven't been disappointed with my boxes either, so a real win!  Anyway, I'm sure you all want to see what I got in my March Birchbox, so without further delay here we go!

As you can see, I was a lucky girl, super happy to receive a beauty blender!  For me, the standout products this month were the beauty blender, the Laura Geller purple gel eyeliner (purple is my favourite colour!), the Lindt (no brainer!) and the Yu-Be - yeah it's not the most exciting packaging, but I'm a sucker for anything Japanese!  Things I'm not so keen on - the Molten Brown scent - just because it's not my kind of scent, don't get me wrong, I'd rather smell of that than 'smell' but it's a bit masculine for me.  Also not keen on the scent of the Argan body lotion, I'm sure it's good for my skin, but I really like sweet scents and neither of these fall into that category, so I might 'donate' them to a friend/family member who will appreciate them more.  I'm really loving the gel eyeliner though, it's so pretty!  Here's some swatches for you :)

*drooling over this now, soooo pretty!*

So that was it, despite a couple of products not being right up my alley, I'm really happy with this box, there's things I will definitely use here, which is what separates it out (for me) from my previous Glossy Box's and She Said box's - too often I'd get things I just wouldn't use.  Well done Birchbox on another great one :)

Keep your eyes peeled for a Birchbox related surprise on here next week xo

Benefit Fake Up

So as you'll probably know, I went to a Benefit cosmetics event last week in Swansea (you can read all about my evening there here).  The event was all about a new product they're releasing called Fake Up, it's a stick concealer with a ring of balm around it.  It's being released here in the UK on March 30th.

They say "This NEW hydrating crease-control concealer, is proven to keep the skin hydrated for 6 hours!  The hydrating ring has vitamin E & apple seed extract for immediate moisurisation! The concealing core hides dark circles, smooths skin and diffuses light."

Fake Up is launching in 3 different shades (not sure if they have plans to launch more shades in the future) which are Light, Medium and Deep.  For me, light is my undereye / highlight shade - medium is slightly darker than my natural skintone and deep is way way darker but works well as a contour shade, primarily if you put a strip if it in the hollows of your cheeks and blend out.

Their head makeup artist (Lisa) recommended applying this beneath your foundation for a more flawless and subtle finish.

My Thoughts

So, what did I think of these?  Well, I had my reservations.  I used to use Boi-ing which stopped working for me as my skin has aged a bit, it would crack under my fine lines and need re-blending throughout the day - but to be honest, I'm finding this with almost every product I've got/use at the moment, I think this is what happens as you get older :/

Anyway, they claim it's 'creaseless' this I was dubious about, I have fine lines under my eyes so I wasn't convinced it would really be creaseless.  It wasn't.  It did crease on me, but only a tiny bit, much less than other concealers I've used, once I blended out the creasing in my fine lines (when it first happened), it wouldn't re-crease.  So, I wouldn't say it's creaseless, but it's pretty close to.

Their staying power was good - I didn't need to re-apply the concealer once it was on, it stayed put all day, kept my eye's looking bright underneath, covering up well the dark circles.

As for using the 'deep' shade for contouring.  This worked well, it's a bit orangey for my skin tone, but as long as I used it underneath the foundation it actually gave a nice warm glow in the hollows of my cheeks to add definition.

All in all these are really good products, I love the hydrating ring around the edge of the concealer, it really does help not to dry out certain problem areas like under the eye.  Benefit may have turned me around on this one :)

Where can you find them: At Benefit stands in Boots and Debenhams, but you can also find out more on their site here.
Cost: £18.50
Would I repurchase? I actually would, which I've surprised myself about!
