Review: Neve Elegantissimi Palette

So, about two weeks ago I was lucky enough to win the giveaway that The Black Pearl Blog hosted for Beauty Chamber.  It was to spend £25 on their site, I know, super lucky!  Anyway, I picked a Neve Pastello lip liner in Crimson (will review separately) and the Neve Elegantissimi palette.

One of the most amazing things about this, they told me on the Friday I'd won, I said what I wanted on Friday afternoon, and while I was laying in bed sleeping on Saturday morning (they very next day!) the postman rang the doorbell with the parcel, now that's fast delivery/service!

The lovely prizes (reviews on the lip liner to come!)

Beautiful shades!!!!

They say "The Elegantissimi palette from Neve Cosmetics contains 10 professional, pressed, neutral eye shadow shades. Classic shades make this palette a basic must have. Vitamin enriched shades created to define and enhance the eyes. The velvety texture gives a high colour pay off, and may be used wet or dry.  The pans are removeable and repositionable as the palette is magnetic. Refills are also available."

Top Row L-R - Coco, Etoile, Butterfly, Bonbon, Noisette

Bottom Row L-R - Smoking, Peluche, Croissant, Espresso, Black Sheep

My Thoughts

It's worth noting two main things about this palette.  One, the pigmentation is beyond amazing, really really high concentration of it.  Secondly, you get a lot of product for your money 3g in each pan to be precise.  Compare that to an MUA 12 shade palette where you get a total of 9g in the entire palette!

About half these shades are pretty matte, the rest have a soft satin sheen to them, nothing over the top or super glittery (Peluche is the most sparkly).

Special mention to the second to last shade (Espresso) too, to give yourself a fairly intense smoky eye, 2-3 dabs of a crease brush onto this is more than enough - don't even bother stroking the brush over it, you'll have way too much product, with these, a little goes a long way.

They last pretty well too.  As usual I always wear an eye shadow primer (usually NARS) under my shadow,  and they lasted as well as any other shadow I've tried.  I had my usual creasing on my right eye after lunch time, but the intensity of the colours didn't fade.  This really has become a bit of a go-to palette for me.  A certain stable in my collection.

It's also worth noting that Neve use no silicones, glycerin, parabens or petrolatum.  Formula works both wet & dry,  non-comedogenic.  Cruelty free, tested on makeup artists, not on animals.  And suitable for vegans :)

Where to find it: Beauty Chamber
Cost: £21.95
Would I repurchase: Hell yes!  Worth every last penny.

Have you tried any Neve palettes?  Did you like them?

TAG: Confessions of a blogger

Hi guys, thought it would be nice to do a cheeky little TAG today - you all know how I enjoy a good tag!  I was tagged by the beautiful one and only Laurie from A Scottish Lass to do this and thought, why not!? :)

Have you had any past online presence before? (Other blog, YouTube, etc)
Yep - before I started blogging, I had my YouTube channel, which I still upload to regularly (about once to twice a week) - be sure to check it out :) No other blog though.  My only 'online presence' was in the gaming world, having an Xbox live account, and playing World of Warcraft etc.

Why did you start a blog?
I'm not sure... I think, I've always enjoyed writing, I even started to write a book a few years ago, and as my love of makeup and beauty products has blossomed I wanted another outlet to share my thoughts with other enthusiasts.  From watching lots of videos on YouTube of people like Fleur de Force and Sprinkle of Glitter, I discovered and fell in love with their blogs and just had the urge to do the same.

When did you become so serious about starting a blog?
Not sure on the phrasing of this question! I basically started my blog after reading others, there was no long period of time thinking about it, I just did it (I'm very impulsive like that!).  I didn't start really taking it seriously though until about July last year (2012), that's when I started posting every day.  I just felt I had so much to say, it was really easy to do.  At that point I'd been blogging for about 6 months and had just reached my first 50 subscribers - yep, it was slow progress!  It still is to a degree :)

What was your first post?
My first post was just a rubbishy 'Hey, I have a blog... ' type post, my second post however was a review of the Fat Cat mascara - I'm not even going to link it, it was terrible!  It's in my archive on the right if you're desperate to read it and see the terrible photo's :p  Oh how things have evolved!

What has been your biggest challenge while blogging?
Easy - to try and not compare myself with other bloggers.  It's still a challenge now.  Hopefully you'll appreciate my honesty :)  But it's genuinely hard when I can put so much time and effort into my blog and YouTube, and see very little interest in either.  Then to see other bloggers/youtubers start up and overtake me in views/subscribers etc in a matter of weeks/months (more YouTube than my blog).  I'm definitely overly critical too, always feeling like what I've written or filmed isn't good enough, then I get into a silly cycle of 'that's why it doesn't do as well' etc... silly I know, but it's how I feel all the same ;)

Where do you see your blog in one year?
Honestly?  Maybe today isn't a good day to answer this question... I'd like to think I'd have doubled my following (reaching 2k), but more than that I'd like a lot more page views :)  Same on my YouTube :)

What is the most rewarding thing about blogging?
That has to be two parts, reading all the lovely comments you lovely people leave me, which helps keep me motivated, and days when I get lots of page views, I feel like I've done something right if that happens, it actually gives me a burst of adrenaline, especially if I'm watching the real time stats on Google Analytics and can see 10+ people on the blog at the same time :)

What is the most discouraging thing about blogging?
Probably me being overly critical of myself... that combined with seeing negativity on twitter and the net towards bloggers.  The way I see it, we're all in it together so we really should support each other and share ideas :)  Shame that isn't often the reality though, although the circle of lovely bloggers I'm lucky enough to surround myself with are pretty sweet :)

What's your lasting inspiration or motivation?
To constantly improve and beat last month.  If I had 15k views last month, I want 16k this month :)  I want to improve me and my blog all the time, making it a lovely warm place to come, put your feet up with a cuppa and have a chat -  that's my big ideal for the blog, a sort of community, like what Sprinkle of Glitter has achieved :)

If you'd like to do this TAG, I invite you all to do it, leave the link to your post in the comments below :)

Week 8 Summary - 100 day spending challenge

Can you believe it's 8 weeks!?  I feel like I start all of these with the same 'omg it's xx weeks already!' but it's true, the time is flying by!  So, what's the last week been like I hear you say?  Well, good and bad.  Bad because it was a stressful week, good because I didn't buy anything I shouldn't and other than when I was at the #bbmeet in Bristol on Saturday, I didn't crave to buy anything :)

Of course, at the #bbmeet we were given lots of goodies which always helps!  But I really really do want to buy the Revlon Nearly Naked foundation - this is a craving that just won't leave, so something that's made it onto my shopping list for the London meetup in April.  Luckily Hannah from Midnight Violets kept me on track at the #bbmeet :)  The only things I bought when I was there was some bath stuff from lush, i.e. bath bomb, bubble bar etc - these are things I've allowed myself on my ban just to keep me sane!

Remember last week when I was saying about how lucky I was to win a giveaway to spend at Beauty Chamber (had the Neve palette)?  Well, I only went and won another one today!!!!! I know, the luck is seriously on my side right now, which really helps with the rubbish week I had last week :)  I won Tattooed Tea Lady's milestone giveaway - which means, I'll have a Naked Basics palette in my grubby paws soon :D

So, they're all the beautiful things that have been on my mind this week - I can see me having to make these purchases once I'm off the ban since the crave for lots of these isn't waning :)

How's your week been?

Bristol Blogger Meetup

Hey guys!  So yesterday was a super fun day, it was the Bristol Blogger meetup organised by the wonderful Beauty Bird and Alessia!

Big shout out to Jenny from The Pulse of Fashion who was kind enough to drive us both down to Bristol (from Cardiff) :)  It was the funniest thing, we got to Bristol, parked up and being a super sweetie she'd made me some really cute cross earrings - so I put them on instantly!  And sitting in the passenger seat I pulled the sun visor down to check the earrings in the mirror and was greeted with this sign!

This seriously made me laugh, and every time I see it, I start laughing again!  Awesome.

So, we made our way over to Frankie and Bennies where we were meeting the rest of the people and we were one of the first there, despite Jenny missing our turn taking us about 20 miles off-route :p

It so lovely to finally meet Beauty Bird - we've been talking on twitter for so long, it was great to finally say Hi in real life!  Same goes for Hannah from Midnight Violets, we've been chatting loads so it was nice to finally meet her :)

Jenny enjoying her amazing goodie bag!  Yeah, that brings me nicely to the goodie bags, oh, my, god were they amazing! I mean seriously, some stonking stuff in there!  The highlight literally and figuratively has to be the Benefit Fine One One (full size), felt so lucky to get one of those :)  n.b. I used it last night, and first impressions are good!

Here's some pics of all the things that were in the goodie bag :)

All the goodies!!!!

Some lovely skincare from Dr Organic - really looking forward to trying this!

You cannot believe how good the Vanilla Biscuit bath and shower gel smells! NOM! And the lavender and Neroli candle - smells soooo good!

Some lovely other bits and bobs

And all the smaller bits and sachets we had :)

All in all it was a great day - I had great fun hanging around and shopping with Hannah, Alison and Jade and the rest of the ladies at the meetup - massive thank you to Alessia and Beauty Bird for putting so much effort into this, it was really amazing :)

SEO Basics for your Blog

**** LAST UPDATED 26th APRIL 2014 ****
I don't proclaim to be an SEO expert or anything like that, but SEO is my day job, and I've been doing it for about two years - and in that time, I've picked up a few tips and tricks of best practice, or as we like to call it in the biz, being 'white hat' :)  This is part of a series of SEO type posts that I've been doing, the first two of which were 'Setting up a Google Analytics account' and 'Understanding Google Analytics'.

First off, a bit of an explanation of what SEO is.  SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, and to put it as simple as possible, it's about getting high up on that first page of a Google search without paying for it (or as high as possible at least!).  Ok, with me so far?  Great, I'll crack on!  I'll get to how to optimise your blog in a sec, first off a bit more about what 'White Hat' etc is.

Do tell me, what is White Hat?

In the industry there are three terms floated about, White Hat, Grey Hat and Black Hat - its fair to say, they're pretty much what they sound like.
  • White Hat is being squeaky clean, not paying for links etc and doing everything Google dictates suggests.
  • Grey Hat is a bit of a middle ground, you're doing most things right, with the odd sneaky trick.
  • Black Hat is basically the dark side - using any means possible to get that top Google position whether that's buy buying all your links, spamming, whatever it takes goddam it!
I think most bloggers fall into White Hat/Grey Hat, it's the Black hats you want to be wary of! :)  Ok, now I'm going to give you some pointers on how to optimise your blog and blog posts.

The Rules! (they're more like guidelines really)

The first rule of SEO is... you don't tell anyone about it... kidding! I know, I know, this isn't fight club! Seriously though, there are some simple rules to bear in mind when you're writing a post.
  • Content is King! Sounds cheesy and basically is - but good quality content will be like catnip for Google, make sure your content is relevant, good quality and not spammy.  So... I don't know, if a PR approaches your beauty blog with a guest post that's filled with hyperlinks to an oil refinery - it's not very relevant to your blog, or the site that it's being linked to.
  • Relevancy - as I said above, keeping your posts relevant and pretty much key.  If all you blog about is cleansers, and suddenly you're blogging about cars, boats, drain covers and next door's cat every once in a while, Google may wonder what's going on.
  • Post regularly - it's fine not to post every day, post as often as you like, but try to keep it regular, whether that's once a month or three times a week, keeping momentum is like tickling Google's belly, purrrrrr.

How to Optimise your posts (the bit you've been waiting for!)

After suffering through all that I'm sure you're keen to look at all the pictures and see some real ways to help your blog rank better with Google, so here we go.

Post Titles
This is kind of important.  Try to put the name of the product in the title, it helps Google work out what it's about and if it's relevant to what the customer/user/person has searched for.  So, here if I'd put 'some purple stuff you put on your cheeks' as the title, it may not rank as well ;)

Where and how to add a relevant title

Hook me up!
Linking relevant 'anchor text' (the words that you're linking off your site) with a relevant/appropriate link also helps Google work out who and what your post is for, just remember to mix things up a bit and vary the anchor text you use - keeps things looking natural :)

Here (the pic below), the first arrow (on the left) is pointing to the anchor text, which in this case is 'Flash Plum', the arrow underneath it is pointing to the checkbox for opening the post in a new window - this is good for keeping your readers on the article they're interested in, and allows them to continue reading another post in a new window, and the arrow on the right is where you need to paste the URL of where you want to take your reader.  So here, if they click on 'Flash Plum' they would expect to be taken to a place where they can buy it - hence the link to superdrug, which is where I bought this.

If this product was gifted to me to review, or if this post was sponsored, you should also hit the checkbox for 'Add 'rel=nofollow' attribute' which is right under the 'open in a new window' checkbox - this tells Google to ignore the link and that it's not a paid SEO link (which is against their guidelines).

linking some anchor text

Images, Images, Images!
Now, this is pretty important.  After you've added your image, left click on it so you get this little tool bar up, then click on properties.  (look at next image below!)

An image of editing properties of an image

When you do that, you'll get this box up.  You should really fill in both these fields, although, the Title Text is optional but the ALT text is important.  The title text gives your picture a tooltip that will display over it, whereas the ALT text should be a meaningful description of the image, and will be read out by screen readers (pieces of software that read web pages for the blind).  So keeping ALT text as a good description of the picture is really important.
A picture of adding ALT text to an image

Content and Keywords
The first arrows are pointing to 'my thoughts' and the 'normal' field.  I always put paragraph headings as 'Minor Heading' from the 'normal' drop down - this is the equilivant to an <h2> tag, telling Google etc that it's a small heading - you generally only have 1 <h1> tag on a post/page which will be the main post heading, which will automatically be there by blogger.

Next up - making words bold!  This is useful mostly for emphasising relevant keywords that you want the reader to be drawn to, these don't need to be links or anything, just keywords relating to the post.

Keywords - it's good SEO practice to have the product/topic's keyword appear a good few times in a post (this is called keyword density).  Not too much that it looks unnatural, but you also want to get the point across of what you're talking about.  I've put circles around relevant keywords (blush and with the brand term 'maybelline).  This will help your SEO rank on Google too :)

(It's worth noting (I'm blowing my own trumpet here!) I rank on page 1, 5th position for the post this is based on (and at time of checking (August 2013), this SEO post ranks #1 for 'beauty blog SEO') :)  So proof that all this works :)

An image of how to optimise your copy

Meta Descriptions
This is the sentence you see under the URL when you do a google search - see the square below?  Well, that's my meta description.  You can amend yours by going into Settings > Search Preferences and edit the Description.  It should be about 155 characters (not dramatically less and definitely no more).  Include keywords that are relevant for your blog, but don't just spam keywords.  You'll see in mine I've included British beauty, Makeup blog, Makeup reviews - all keywords that people may type in to find my blog.  Again, make sure this is relevant.

EDIT 01/09/13: Note, that when you update your meta description, it can take a few days to show up on Google, just in case you're wondering why it hasn't updated yet :)

An image of how to add a meta description

So there you have it, my tips and tricks for optimising your blog, there's literally masses and masses more detail that I could go into about this but we'd be here all day, and I'd have written war and peace! I hope it's been easy to follow and understand.  If you'd like to see any other posts on topics like this just leave a comment below and I'd be happy to put a post together :)

Page Speed (this section added 7th October 2013)
This can be a fairly significant ranking factor too, but the faster your blog loads, the more likely it is that your reader will stay and read more content (who wants to wait for 2 mins for a page to load?), and the better Google will rank your blog.  One of the biggest issues with blogs and page load times, and the easiest one to fix is around images.  I was guilty of this myself, letting blogger do the resizing for me.

If you're taking high quality photo's and uploading them straight to your blog, then Blogger is going to have to resize the images every time the page loads, and if you're a beauty blogger/fashion blogger, the chances are you'll have a photo-heavy blog.  So, do yourself a favour and edit your pics in image editing software first like PicMonkey and reduce the size to the size it needs to be on screen, there's no point in having it any bigger, it'll only slow your page down.

Useful Sites & Tools
SEOmoz - veritable guru's of SEO with useful guides and tools
Google Keyword tool - use it to search for local monthly search terms relating to a keyword such as 'beauty blog'
Google linking guidelines - are you white hat or black hat!?
Google SEO tips - their official tips!
Jayne from Jayne's Kitschen has also written a great post on it, from a broader angle :)

Acronyms
SEO - Search Engine Optimisation
SERPs - Search engine results page
RSS - really simple syndication
DA - Domain Authority
PA - Page Authority
PR - PageRank
There's not many more that would be relevant to blogging :)

Review: Wei White Lotus Moisture Rich Eye Blend

Well that's a mouthful of a title!  This little cherub came in my January Birchbox.  I'm always fairly dubious of eye creams, mainly because I've never noticed that much difference with them.  I know it's difficult for them considering I have such mammoth bags under my eyes.  I had little hopes for this little tub, but I can honestly say, it's been the best eye cream I have ever used!  There, I said it! It's amazing!

They say "Now there is hope for crow’s feet! This luxurious delicate eye cream uses White Lotus to hydrate and Peptide Argireline to minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The key ingredient, White Lotus flower, has long been revered not only for its beauty, but also for its ability to absorb and retain water after it has been hand-harvested from ponds lined with nutrient-rich black mud."

My Thoughts

I've had a real noticeable difference with using this eye cream, a definitely lessening of the puffiness around my eyes and the fine lines are not as noticeable either.  It absorbs well, doesn't leave an oily residue on my skin and just in general, is amazing!

Saying that it's reduced the puffiness around my eyes is a big deal, it really is.  I've only ever encountered this before with the Rituals firming eye cream (review here), but not to this extent.  I've looked online and I have seen that although it's paraben free, it does have phenoxyethanol in it, which is basically the same, it's a faux-paraben - so don't consider this one paraben free - which does disappoint me, if I'm spending £60 on an eye cream (yep, thats how much it costs!) I expect certain things, paraben free, cruelty free and suitable for vegans.  But be happy to know that this isn't tested on animals so it is cruelty free.

All in all, I really love this product, it's made a difference to my eyes but I am at the end of the little 2ml sample now and I think this is where me and Wei will part ways, I just can't bring myself to spend £60 on an eye cream... especially one that has parabens in it.

Luchessa

Hello beautiful people!
I’m a thirty-something metropolis girl, with experience of living on different continents, speaking several languages, a big passion for makeup & beauty products, and a recent urge to share my knowledge and tricks that I learned over the past years.

When and Why did I start blogging you will ask? The answer is quite easy. I started blogging as a way to connect with other women (and men) all around the beauty world, who feel as creative, passionate and enthusiastic about all the fabulous things on this globe as i do.
Besides, sharing the experience and different tips & tricks is power. So since september 2012 im on this big journey called "beauty blogosphere".

Remember how exciting it was to read a fantasy or a thriller as a teen, instead of having to go through let’s say a geography book for school?! I feel like reading blogs is a really nice & easy way to educate yourself about certain things, without having the impression of the actual studying. Because you read about something you already feel passionate about.

What i learned along the way, is that this community is really helpful, honest and inspiring. Meeting so many motivated bloggers and smart readers helped me to create many ideas and bring them to life on my blog. I also learned to look "behind the curtains" and see what stands behind the sparkly brands and pretty packaging.

I really hope 2013 is going to be a great year of beauty and trends, traveling, new delicious food, healthy lifestyle, passion & dreams and the sharing it all with similar minded beauties out there.
Stop by any time and see for yourself what "Beauty expression by Luchessa" is all about.

Week 7 summary - 100 day spending challenge

Hey guys!  It's hard to believe it's 7 weeks in already.  After having a strong start, then very wobbly middle to the challenge, I feel that I'm getting stronger again :)  What helps though is that I won a giveaway (over on TheBlackPearlBlog) - I won the Beauty Chamber/Neve giveaway (yay!) where I got to pick £25 of Neve makeup, which I had on Saturday (after winning it on Friday, talk about speedy!).

I picked the Elegantissimi neutral palette, a Pastello lip liner (which if you check my YouTube tab you can see me sporting it in my latest video!) and they sent a lovely Eco Tools angled liner brush too :)  I know this isn't a review post but let me just say, I've used the Neve Elegantissimi palette for the past two days and I'm seriously impressed - mostly matte, but also some light shimmer shades, massively pigmented and a really good size of product too - watch this space for a full proper review :)

As for things I've been lusting over, nothing really major this last week... pretty much nothing actually :)  YAY!  Oh and although I think it goes without saying, just to clarify, I haven't bought any makeup or anything naughty over the last week either :)

Yay for having a good week :D

How's your spending ban going?

My Favourite Xbox Games

One of the things I want to do this year is to share a little bit more about myself and the kind of things I like to do outside work and blogging.  Back before I started blogging and YouTubing all my spare time was taken up gaming.  Then I reached a point where nothing really interested me, it was then that I found YouTube and then blogging and my interests shifted.  But now I've been blogging a little while I've managed to establish a bit of a routine (yay!) and finally have time to start gaming once again, more to the point, I want to start gaming again.

I have around... 70 xbox 360 games that I've collected over the years and these are just some of my favourites - games I have drunken memories of playing online with friends(PGR), games I've enjoyed the journey of (LA Noire), and games that have required skill to improve at (Guitar Hero), and, games that are pure fun (Lego LOTR).

Out of my collection, these are some of my favourites.

Halo

My love affair with Xbox began with Halo.  I remember when I was a student (yeah, that long ago!) it had just come out on the original xbox and one of my housemates had it - I couldn't get over how good the grass looked, I mean, there were individual blades of grass you could see, not just a green smush of colour on the ground.  After that, we (my hubby who was my boyfriend back then) bought our own xbox and Halo and played it through on co-op on every difficultly level.  On Friday and Saturday nights for about a year after, we'd play through our favourite levels again for fun.  I have really fond memories of Halo, it's a fantastic sci-fi story and the newer versions (Halo 3 onwards) have fantastic online multiplayer gameplay too.  Something I shall be getting back into.

Skyrim

It's slightly sneaky that I've included this in my Xbox list because it's mostly on the PC that I played it.  However, after giving the hubby my awesome gaming pc and me buying a MacBook, Skyrim won't run on this anymore, so we picked up a pre-owned copy for the Xbox so I could play it on that instead, and pick up some achievements on the way.  My love of this series on the xbox started with Oblivion, as it did with many others.  For those of you who don't know, Oblivion is the Elder Scrolls release before Skyrim - very similar games (Skyrim is pretty much an evolution of Oblivion).  Oblivion was one of those games where I completed every achievement possible, even on the DLC (downloadable content) - I ploughed 200 hours of play time into it over the space of about 1-2 years and enjoyed every last minute of it.  It's fair to say, Skyrim really lived up to the hype and it's predecessor (Oblivion), it's visually stunning, immersive  customisable (weapons/armour) and just sheer brilliant - a game I plan to start spending more time on over the coming months.

Guitar Hero

The original Guitar Hero I think, was only available on the PS2 - Guitar Hero 2 came out in the early days of the 360 which is when I started playing it, with the Fisher Price looking guitars (which I still have).  This is the only version of Guitar Hero I can say I have come the closest to completing.  I have 4 songs on expert left to do and that's it - I've 99% completed the Buckethead song - crazy I know but I don't think I'll get that final stretch done.  It's been too long of not playing to complete it, but that's fine. I still have fun picking it back up again and playing a few songs whether that's on Guitar Hero 2, 3 or Rock Band.  I really like skilful games like this, they're not something you can bluff through or really get lucky at.  If you complete it on Hard, you've really earned it.  I guess it's kinda the same as PGR and Forza, games that you need to learn and get good at as there's a skill level involved - both fantastic racing games by the way :)

So, that's this beauty blogger's summary of my favourite Xbox games, I might do another of my PC games, but I'm likely to waffle on about that for even longer!  Maybe mobile games too :)

Whats your favourite Xbox games to play?

My Obsession Confession

Sooo... many of you may know, from reading regular posts, following me on twitter, seeing my YouTube videos that I have a thing for purple.  I seriously love it, and if you team it with black, it's even better *giggidy* - and when I was photographing some products to review yesterday I looked at my nail polish collection and realised that I have an above average collection of purple nail polishes... how had I not noticed this before!

Did you count them up?  No? I did... 16 of them... 16!!!!!  Now, that's a lot of purple!  It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have a large collection of teal/peppermint shades, reds, nudes and glitter polishes, but I do... don't get me wrong, I don't have a crazy collection (not by a beauty bloggers standard anyway!) I think I come in at around 40-50 polishes in total.

Whats crazier is that some of these shades, (kinda embarrassed to admit this) I've never even worn!  Like, why?  What made me buy them?  Some of them it's easy why I got them, like the OPI one at the front of the above pic - its simply the most beautiful purple that's ever been made :)

So today I'm saying, my name is Georgina and I have an addiction to buying purple nail polish.  What's your addiction?

Review: Witch Skin Clearing Primer

Happy Friday everyone!  Hope you had a nice Valentines day yesterday?  I made me and the hubby Dauphinoise potatoes - my absolute favourite!!!  NOM!

Anyway - you didn't come here to hear a play by play of what I cooked last night!  This is ANOTHER one of the goodies that was in the mahoosive goodie bag I had in the #bbloggersxmas event - I know, when will these reviews end of all that stuff right?

Witch is a product/brand I've been familliar with since I was about 14, so I'm talking a frightening 19/20 years (scarey!) back then, they sold witch hazel in a bottle and you'd apply to your skin with a cotton pad and it would help clear up acne - there were no primers like this that that made (that I'm aware of) it was more simplistic things.  Things that I used and re-purchased.

They say "Witch Anti-blemish Skin Clearing Primer is designed to help prepare your skin for foundation by mattifying and absorbing excess oils, providing a smooth, silky base that helps you achieve an even and long lasting finish with any foundation or powder. Added to this, it also helps prevent and target blemishes by protecting skin from the layers of make-up, which can cause or aggravate blemishes."

My Thoughts

Primers are something that I'm only really starting to get into, so I don't have a vast array of other primers to compare this one to.  I have used Bare Minerals Prime Time, the Nivea one (had a sample in a magazine and loved it!), the Collection one and another one that was in an old glossy box that I didn't really like.  One thing some of the other ones I've tried have done is actually make the foundation cling to my pores and accentuate them - this isn't a good look, trust me.

The Nivea one didn't do that, it just made my skin smell like a clean summers day and well... I'll save the rest for a proper review when I've bought a full size of it :)  Back to Witch!  This didn't make the foundation cling to my pores (yippee!), it certainly helped it cling in place for the day and stopped it being as oily.

I can't say it helped my blemishes, I've had blemishes both small and large the entire time I've been using it - I don't think it's caused them at all, and you never know, without it I could have had worse breakouts, but I'm not convinced it's helped in that way at least.

But, as a foundation primer I've been using it every day for about 4 weeks now.  It's done a great job, there's no real scent to it, nothing nasty anyway.

Oh, and following on from using this and liking it, I followed them on twitter, then nominated Laurie from A Scottish Lass for their flawless follower Friday giveaway and we won!  So I have a pressed powder of theirs to start trying now too, yay!

Anyway, that was a bit of an all-over-the-place review, but to summarise, I like it, I'd recommend it, not convinced it's helping my spots, but I don't think it's making them worse, its helped my foundation stay in place way better than if I hadn't used it, and it doesn't accentuate my pores #winning if you ask me!

Where to buy: Superdrug (here) and on the Witch site (here)
Costs: £6.99
Would I repurchase? Yes

Review: Vivo eye liner

Hello everyone!  Happy Valentines day!!!! I hope you've all been swamped with valentines cards :) Now, back a few months ago, you may remember that I went to Tesco and bought a few Vivo goodies, well, this is one of them :)

Looking through my eye liner collection almost all of what I have is black shades and some brown, no actual colours, so when I saw this one on the stand (bear in mind, I loooove teal!) I had to try it :)  Oh and before you mention it, I do know they're the same company as MUA :)

They say "These little magic wands of goodness have a lot more uses than we bet you originally thought when you clicked on this page! Kohl is traditionally used to line the waterline – of course, ours does that fantastically, and won’t budge all day. But why not try applying it softly to the top of your eyelids and using our innovative soft sponge at the other end of the pencil to smudge it into your eyelid? Ahhh you hadn’t thought of that before had you! You can use it on it’s own to create a softer eyeliner look, or use it as a base for our gorgeous eye shadows that’ll help them stay put all day. There are six shades, and one of our firm favourites at VIVO HQ comes in the form of Green Lagoon – a shimmery Turquoise!"

My Thoughts

It does scare me a little, wearing colours like this, because lets face it, I'm not 14 any more!  However, whatever your age this is a beautiful colour to wear and easy to make it work for you.  What I did, was do my makeup the usual way (neutral smoky eye with winged black liquid eye liner) and then I ran this under the lower lash line and used the smudger at the end to blend it all in - I extended it to the point of the winged black liner too and looked really pretty.

As for it's quality, it lasted really well, for most of the day before fading a bit and disappearing into the horrible fine lines under my eyes!  It's very creamy and easy to blend before it sets, and the pigmentation on it is fantastic, but to be honest, how often nowadays do we find khol liners with bad pigmentation?

Where to buy: Large Tesco stores, or online here.
Costs: £1.50
Would I buy it again? Yes
